CHAPTER SIX

THE SECOND FLOOR

Kyle found himself on the second floor. All faces and all ghosts were gone. He looked around to make sure that he was alone. He heard a vibrating sound coming from a small table underneath a light. The table started moving until the top drawer opened. With a bright yellowish glow, Kyle knew he had another key. He pulled the key out of the drawer and added it to his growing collection.

The hallway was long as the ones upstairs and was lined with doors and lights. More small tables were sporadically placed down the hall. He decided not to look in the tables but rather see if any of the doors were open. He tried the first one and found it to be unlocked. He opened the door and entered what appeared to be a long bedroom that spanned the equal length of the hallway. Beds were in two neatly placed rows with nightstands on one side of them and closet dressers on the other.

He walked down the middle of the beds. As he walked, he looked for more signs of his next challenge. Nothing was obvious to him. He tried a closet, then another but found little in the way of direction. Instead, he found old undershirts folded and placed properly next to underwear. Other garments of clothing were either folded or hung in the closet. Drawers held socks, more underwear and shirts, and some toiletry items.

Kyle closed the door and walked to the next one. He heard a noise behind him. He turned around. “Enov? Gilda?” he asked, expecting to see them. He heard noises from the other direction and turned to see several statues of boys all about his size and age. “Who are all of you?” he asked with a hint of fear in his voice. One by one, each statue cast a bluish-white glow and became real.

The boy closest to him had red hair, black pants with suspenders and a white shirt. “It’s all right, you’re among friends,” he assured Kyle.

“Who are you?”

“I’m Preston Hunt,” he said. “I was one of the challengers.”

“So was I,” said a black-haired boy. “David Coleman.”

“Me, too, in fact, all of us were challengers,” said another boy.

“What happened to all of you?” asked Kyle as he looked at them.

“We all lost at different challenges,” said Preston. “I lost it in the hallway of faces.”

“I lost it out at the pond,” said David.

“Me, too,” said another boy.

“I lost it in the Conservatory,” said a pudgy boy with glasses.

“What happened?” asked Kyle.

The pudgy boy sat on the bed. “I was trying to find the song. All the instruments were floating over my head. When I found the song that any girl would like, I selected it.” He looked down. “Mister Je Rouge came in and laughed at me and told me that I had failed.”

“I was in the Dining Room when the flying creatures got me,” said another boy. “When I woke up, Je Rouge told me that I had lost, and I was sent here.
